Dutch Group regional meeting, 10 December 2021

On Friday December 10, we met at my home in Leiden, in a regional meeting, after regrettably the meeting previously planned at Lucien's place had to be cancelled. Present were Bert van Rhijn, Dick van Beek and Peter Soonius, apart from myself (Ted). In view of the continuing hassle concerning meeting in Covid times I already had proposed holding more frequent small-scale regional meetings.

At any rate it worked very well, having an afternoon meeting involving 4 Dutch Group members. Over coffee and tea, enjoying the excellent cake made by Rosien van Rhijn, we looked at a collection of models on the table and heard Dick telling us about his research after British steam trams. Then we went upstairs to run the models brought by Dick and Bert over my layout, which also gave me a chance to show my new railcars.

The success of this meeting made us wonder whether it isn't a good idea to focus on this kind of frequent activity, also in view of the geographic spread of our members. They will not replace larger meetings and shows, but a small meeting is easy to plan and at present probably the best thing to do. Peter in any case is prepared to host another of these small scale meetings in the near future.

Our narrow gauge model railway show at the Valkenburg museum had to be cancelled because of confusion over the way they had to implement Government regulations for a walk-through location. We'll have to see how this develops, because we're subjected to changes in controlling policy week after week.

Our answer was to organise an impromptu meeting at my house, which proved to be a great success. In these bizarre times it is best to reason in terms of things one CAN do instead of CANNOT do.

The meeting was a huge success, with seven participants apart from myself: Jan van Mourik (who brought Uivernest), Lucien Eijdems, Ruud Wittekoek, Bert van Rhijn, Dick van Beek, Hans Kamps, and Siem de Jong, who brought a huge collection of H0e, H0f (6.5mm gauge) and even H0p (5.4mm gauge) models, all DCC chipped and many fitted with sound. Following the meeting, six of us went for a meal at a nearby Chinese restaurant.

Dutch Group meeting, 29 May 2021

No one could have guessed how much the world was going to change, back in January and February 2020. It would take 15 months before some of our members were to meet again, on May 29, 2021, apart from a few one-to-one visits between members. Six members including myself got together on May 29, bringing boxes of models and three layouts to Lucien's home in Roosendaal. Lucien had set up Zweifelsfall, Dick brought his computer-operated OberUnter, and I brought Creag Dhubh Summit.

Five out of six: Dick Schuurman, Peter Duijve, Lucien Eijdems, Jos de Klerk and Jan van Mourik.
